Torus – Foundry Wharf Extra Care Scheme – New Development

Torus are a housing association providing 40,000 homes and serving 75,000 people in Merseyside and Cheshire. They have a strong social purpose and look to invest in the growth and regeneration of affordable housing and flourishing communities.

We were delighted to partner with Torus in designing their new extra care development Foundry Wharf, based in St. Helens. This was a hugely exciting project, where we would deliver our comprehensive service in all aspects of the scheme, including the bistro, communal lounge, salon, assisted bathroom, reception, corridors and staff areas, along with the exterior aesthetic of the building.

Foundry Wharf would house some residents due to move out of other schemes – therefore, we were able to carry out a thorough consultation. This was an enjoyable, collaborative experience as the residents were involved in taking photographs to inspire the themes of each floor. Their images have been framed and displayed around the building alongside other historic photographs of St. Helens.

The scheme has been truly been designed with location in mind, as bespoke aspects of the décor reflect the residents’ community and its rich past. In the bistro, the artwork and lighting nods to the St. Helens glass industry and is open to the public to visit. Warm red and orange tones have been used with soft greige furniture to create a modern and welcoming space to meet, drink and dine.

In the communal lounge, we used a joyful yellow on the fireplace wall, which was subtly continued through the furniture and accessories. This charming living area emits a chic and timeless feel and features traditional, conversational pieces such as the ‘trunk’ and ‘clock’ coffee tables. It was designed to create a sense of home that makes the residents feel like they are relaxing in their living room.

In the corridors of the building, various colours have been used to indicate floor level and assist in wayfinding. There is a breakout area on each, with decorative items reminiscent of St. Helens’ legacy and its active role in rugby and the locomotive, mining and glass industries.

Torus received full project management and appreciated our ability to be flexible and accommodating to any delays. We were able to store furniture until they were ready for its installation and provide a wide variety of products ranging from signage to crockery for the residents lounge.
